The great British summer is upon us and with that, comes the increasingly popular outdoor cinematic experiences. Pop-up cinemas and drive-in theatres were steadily growing in popularity pre-pandemic but thanks to them being outdoors and participants needing to either stay in their cars or sit in their bubbles, film lovers are flocking to venues up and down the UK to watch their favourite movies. Here’s a look at 5 unique experiences to look forward to this year.

If you’re a lover of scary movies, pop along to one of the fright night events - but be on the lookout for actors causing mischief!
4. Cinema in the City - Liverpool
In Liverpool, FACT has introduced a brand-new film programme in hidden locations across the City. Bringing together the best in independent cinema and showcasing emerging talent from local filmmakers, Cinema in the City kicks off on the 13th August with Bloody Nose, Empty Pockets, Ammonite and Apples, at the stunning Grade II listed Cotton Exchange Rooftop Garden. Food and drink for this programme of events is being provided by locally renowned restaurant, Maray.
5. Pop Up Screens - London
Find Pop Up Screens at 8 London locations this year as they bring a summer-long festival of films including titles such as The Craft, 10 Things I Hate About You, Jaws, Back to the Future, Grease and 500 Days of Summer to name but a few. Running from the 9th July through to the 19th September, you can find the full listings on their website.
With restrictions slowly easing, Britain’s summer cinema has the potential to reap the benefits of the innovation event organisers and cinema owners have had to employ to keep the theatrical experience alive through the pandemic. As we tentatively approach some semblance of normality, we look forward to sampling all of the creative experiences that organisers will use to get us back in front of the big screen.
